Turning a product vision into detailed, credible requirements requires one foot in the user's world and the other foot in the developer's world. It requires imagination, courage, and perception:

  • Imagination to come up with ideas, new and even good
  • Courage to watch good ideas become targets of intense criticism
  • Perception to find better solutions in the criticism

The final ingredient is hard work on the details.

I've spent 20 years in product development environments collecting and learning from criticism. Over time, I've developed an instinct for when details are important and when they obscure the focus on the top-level goals. I know how to interview your top technical experts to get the best input to a design; I know when to take the information that's available, close myself in a room, and come up with a solution.
